Overview

A chance encounter between Eric Long and Ian Friedman in the early part of 2015 led to Mr. Long joining the firm shortly thereafter. The attorneys crossed paths in a hallway and stopped as they looked familiar to one another. A brief discussion revealed that Mr. Long was a law student in Mr. Friedman’s Cybercrime class at the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law years earlier. Mr. Long explained through further discussion that upon graduation, he moved to Chicago, Illinois where he accepted a position as a litigator handling a diverse range of cases. They decided to work together on some criminal cases and the rest is history.

Prior to joining Friedman & Nemecek, L.L.C., Mr. Long served clients in varying criminal matters as well as in commercial, employment, civil rights, education, personal injury, product liability and construction litigation cases. This diverse practice has lent itself well to his current position with the firm. Oftentimes, clients present with complex cases that involve civil or administrative aspects that are “quasi-criminal” in nature. The law firm has always recognized that a utilization of the civil process could help defeat or mitigate the existing criminal investigation or prosecution. Accordingly, Mr. Long brings his wealth of legal knowledge as a dynamic not routinely seen in criminal defense firms. By way of example, Mr. Long would handle the professional licensing board proceedings for a doctor being criminally prosecuted or the Title IX hearing for a college student accused of sexual misconduct. Mr. Long’s experience within these different realms is an extraordinary benefit to the firm’s clients as it arms the defense with greater information.

Mr. Long’s criminal practice includes municipal, state, and federal representation of clients at all stages of litigation, from pre-indictment investigations to post-conviction work. While licensed in Ohio and Illinois, Mr. Long will accompany his clients to courts and hearings across the United States. Approximately half of the clients in need of Friedman & Nemecek, L.L.C.’s assistance are located outside Ohio.

As the firm culture encourages, Mr. Long remains firmly committed to public service within the legal and general communities-at-large. In 2016, he accepted an invitation to join The Judge John M. Manos Inn of Court as an Associate. A year earlier, he was also the recipient of the Award for Excellence in Pro Bono Service from the Judges of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and the Chicago Chapter of the Federal Bar Association. He is an active member of the American Bar Association, Ohio Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, Ohio State Bar Association, and Chicago Bar Association. He also lectures to local attorneys on topics related to Cyber Security, technology, and modern case investigative techniques.
