Attorney Ian Friedman's Client Receives Outpouring of Public Support

|

According to Attorney Ian Friedman, the story of his 15-year-old client, Bresha Meadows, has struck a chord with communities all over the country. Speaking with Huffington Post, Attorney Friedman revealed that his office has been inundated with letters of support for Meadows, who stands accused of aggravated murder for the shooting death of her father.

"People are sharing their own similar experiences [with domestic abuse] and telling her to keep her head high," Friedman told Huffington Post. "This tragedy has brought out the best in so many people literally across the globe. Their hearts go out to this young girl."

Case Background

According to police, Meadows shot and killed her 41-year-old father, Jonathan Meadows on July 28. Her mother, Brandi Meadows, has called her daughter a hero for taking action during a violent altercation that day. Brandi Meadows allegedly suffered years of abuse from her husband and, in 2011, even filed a restraining order against him.

Meadows' case, which has already received national attention, has inspired the support of several domestic violence organizations. Love & Protect, which is dedicated to assisting people of color who have been victims of domestic abuse, released a statement calling for prosecutors to drop the charges against Meadows. "The state failed to protect Bresha," the statement reads. "Now, it has chosen to criminalize her."

Meadows has entered a not-guilty plea and remains in custody, where she recently turned 15. Attorney Friedman has stayed in frequent contact with her as they prepare for trial and reports that Meadows is holding up well, considering the circumstances. "She has lots of questions about what is going to happen in the short and long terms,” he told Huffington Post.

If you are interested in supporting Bresha Meadows, there are several ways to contribute. The Meadows have set up a GoFundMe campaign to help support their family during this trying time. Letters to Bresha can also be sent directly to our offices:
