History of Cuyahoga County, Ohio

Cuyahoga County is currently the most populated county in Ohio, with a population of more than 1,280,000 as of 2010. The community began thousands of years ago with the Adena and Hopewell Mound Builders. The area was later populated by the Wyandot, Huron, Miami, and Delaware tribes. "Cuyahoga" is their word for "crooked" and was originally used to describe the Cuyahoga River.

As the 1600s came and went, Europeans began to settle throughout North America. It was in 1787 under the Northwest Ordinance when Connecticut sold the Western Reserve (the area south of Lake Erie) to the Connecticut Land Company. General Moses Cleveland was appointed to survey the area, which is where the City of Cleveland eventually got its name. The additional "a" was dropped due to a newspaper misprint in 1831.

On March 1 of 1803, the Ohio territory became a state and began forming counties. The state has a sparse and widespread population, so the original counties were large but were eventually separated into smaller counties as the population grew. In June of 1808, Cuyahoga County branched out of Geauga County, which had also branched from Trumbull County. It wasn't until May of 1810, however, that Cuyahoga County's independence from Geauga became effective.

Over the years, Cuyahoga County has experienced extensive changes and growth. Border adjustments had to be made as more counties were established. The area was even on the brink of war at one point due to a dispute over the construction of the Columbus Street Bridge, which would allow visitors to drive straight into Cleveland without travelling through Ohio City, which is now a part of Cleveland itself. All of this history has contributed to Cuyahoga County's current status as the most populated and urbanized county in Ohio.
