In a ruling issued Friday, Judge Kenneth Spanagel denied Mellinger's request
to be considered for the Parma Municipal Court's diversion program. The
program allows offenders to complete a court-ordered sentence, such as
community service, in lieu of jail time if convicted. Defense attorney
Ian Friedman said he respected the judge's decision.
